Nautical Designs Coast into Our Home – JAN June 2016

For those of us who live in coastal counties we are never too far from the sea, and can enjoy the advantages of all that comes with living such a lovely location. From beach combing for sea glass and shells, taking to the water in boats, or enjoying the fruits of the sea with delicious local catches, the many benefits of our seaside location are to be treasured. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the influence of this outdoor way of life often finds its way into our home with the ever popular trend for nautical interiors.

This season is no exception will all manner of seaside-inspired furnishings to be found in many stores and online.  But rather than dressing your home with the kitsch, keep it clean and contemporary. From navy to indigo or denim, blues of every hue are a key part of any coastal decor scheme. For a stunning effect they can be used on walls with pigment rich paints, ombre fabrics for curtains or cushions, or Ikat rugs for the floor. Whether painted on the wall or used with the occasional decorative accent, blues are extremely popular and provide a striking background to brass and copper accessories. For a more muted look driftwood colours in soft greys and browns provide a lighter and airier alternative for walls, floors and accessories.
