[My February column for the wonderful Just About Dorset is about the age-old trade-off between fashion and style. Where you sit on the continuum in 2016.]
Trends change frequently in the flighty worlds of fashion and interior design and it can be difficult, not to mention, expensive to keep up to date with what is currently “en vogue” both in your wardrobe and around your home.
Unless you are a dedicated follower of fashion it’s more important to develop your own sense of style and create an environment which reflects your character and taste. However, it is possible to give a nod to current trends with some carefully chosen items which will still add beauty to you home beyond just a season in fashion.
Pantone, the international colour consultancy and trend forecaster, has designated Rose Quartz and Serenity as the hottest colours for 2016. Whilst you might look on them initially and wonder how it would be possible to incorporate them into your home, these two colours are regularly seen in nature. You only have to look at the sky on a chilly morning as the sun comes up and they will be there to see in all their pink and blue glory.
But if you wish to bring these colours into your surroundings so they last longer than a sunrise have a look at Sanderson’s www.sanderson-uk.com new range of fabrics and wallpapers. Their Papavera collection includes Malmo, a pretty wallpaper 214768 and coordinating fabric 234655 in Powder Blue/Pink which is a “Scandinavian inspired printed foliage stripe with accents of little berries”. With their creamy white background they bring a contemporary twist to your home without being glaringly of the moment.
Designer’s Guild www.designersguild.com offer a more painterly effect with their Marquisette collection. The Cielo – Sky wallpaper PDG677/01 is reminiscent of “summer skies, liberating and expressive”. The hand-painted clouds provide an airy backdrop to the Caprifoglio – Sky fabric FDG2352/01 which is smothered with blousy blooms. Together they recall the warmer, fragrant days of summer whilst bringing in the soft blue and pink so favoured this year.
Perhaps one of easiest ways to bring a trend into your home is with scatter cushions which can update your interiors like a breath of fresh air. Anthroplogie’s www.anthropologie.com.uk Folding Fans Cushions, 20 x 20 – 51cm, Blue, £48.00 offer an artful addition to your sofa with their beautiful blue and white geometric designs. Finished with pretty soft pink tassels they will still offer style and comfort long after the changing winds of fashion have blown over…… Read the full article here
